Melissa McCarthy Sandra BullockSandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy star as FBI Agents in the movie ‘The Heat’. Like any good agent, Bullock and McCarthy require proper footwear that will provide the cushion and support their feet need while filming those tough action scenes.

“I often start with what they wear on their feet,” said Catherine Marie Thomas, costume designer for the film. “Especially if they have to run [and perform] physical activity, like in this film.” Thomas expresses the importance of balance between masculine and feminine style for these celebs using the right clothing for the two actresses. “They are completely willing to transform themselves, said Thomas. When it came down to Melissa’s character Thomas wanted to incorporate Adidas shoes because of her demanding physical role. “She’s just so physical and always putting her foot up or tripping over things or running. It was very important that she could do that,” said Thomas.

It is important that the right shoes are worn for protection and guard against pain and discomfort. A podiatrist like Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C. can make recommendations on how to care and find shoes that fit you, as well as help you with any foot pain you might have experienced from wearing ill fitting footwear.

Foot ExerciseWhile an active lifestyle is highly recommended, large amounts of time on your feet can place more stress on your feet, adding the risk of injury to the plantar fascia.

According to Lizzie Fuhr of Popsugar Fitness, when the feet are put under pressure, tissues can slit, causing swelling and make your feet less supple. Lizzie recommends following a steady routine of stretching exercises which will help alleviate stress on the plantar fascia.

Although it is important to get adequate exercise for your feet and ankles, you should be aware of proper exercise techniques before you embark on a new program. A podiatrist like Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C can provide exercise recommendations that allow you to gain strength in your feet and ankles while avoiding foot pain or foot injuries.

Geriatric PodiatryAs human beings, we become more susceptible to fractures and injuries since our bones and muscles age alongside us. A new study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh found that women older than 65 are more likely to suffer foot fractures. Although everyone should monitor and care for their feet, this is especially true for older women.

A group of 10,000 women aged 65 and older were surveyed and tested by walking a certain distance. The team then focused on those who went on to have a foot or ankle fracture. Less physically active women who were older and had osteoporosis had more cases of fracturing their feet while younger, overweight, and more physically active women were more likely to fracture their ankle.

If you are suffering from any podiatric complaints that may be related to age you should seek out the care of a podiatrist such as Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C. Dr. Hyman can evaluate your problem as well as provide you with treatment options.

Geriatrics and Podiatry

When people age, some common issues that may occur are bone density loss, dry skin, poor circulation, and even rough brittle nails. These issues may also affect your foot health without care.

It is important to take care of your feet because feet that are injured or diseases can affect your overall health and having painful feet hinders your ability to do daily activities.

As we age, health problems become more likely, so it is essential to visit your doctor for check-ups. It is recommended to check your feet frequently for any possible cuts, bruises, swelling, corns, etc.

Cracked or dry feet can be treated by applying moisturizer. It is also important not to wear old socks because the older the sock, the higher the chance of exposure to bacteria.

Lastly, good foot health means you can have a more active lifestyle.
