Fashion faux pas: Men who are following the trend are giving themselves smelly, fungus-infested feet. Pharmacists say that to prevent odour developing it is important to alternate shoes so the sweat can dry outMany men run a risk of contracting feet fungus, and foul odor when it comes to wearing trendsetting loafers without socks, according to experts. The look, which celebrity figures Ryan Gosling and Jude Law favor is causing a dramatic rise in bad foot odor and cases of athlete’s foot.

Recent surveys which Daily Mail reports show sales of products to remedy these foot ailments have bolstered over ten percent. Pharmacist Omar El-Gohary states that he’s received a steady flow of inquiries regarding customers asking about how to minimize foot odors when wearing shoes without socks. “People should use cotton over nylon, and make sure these are changed daily to avoid a build-up of bacteria,” said El-Gohary.

Anyone is susceptible in attaining Athlete’s foot, but can be easily avoided following the right preventative care and treatment. A podiatrist like Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C. will be able to determine your condition and follow the appropriate treatment options for foot care needs.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a very contagious form of fungus, which can infect persons usually resulting in itching, burning, dry, and flaking feet. Treatment is often difficult, because of its contagious and reoccurring nature. Tinea pedis is the fungus which causes athletes foot, and is found to survive in moist humid areas.
Common places found:

-shower floors
-public changing areas -locker rooms
-Gyms
-bathrooms
-public swimming pools
-socks and shoes
-dormitory style houses

What is Tinea Pedi?

Is the same fungus which causes ringworm, and is known to be spread by direct contact of the infected body part. Or infection can spread by touching other objects and body parts which have been exposed to the fungus. Tinea Pedi is mostly found on the feet, because it is the ideal place for it to thrive on.

Treatment & Prevention

Because of its reoccurring nature of tinea fungus and athletes foot, the best way to treat this condition is with prevention. By taking the necessary precautions such as:
-Wear flips-flops or sandals in locker rooms and public showers.
-Use powders t keep your feet dry
-Keep your feet exposed to light and cool air
-Treating athletes foot with special creams/sprays

Jessie JThe Voice coach and singer Jessie J broke her foot two years ago, but still is enduring the excruciating aftermaths of her injury. The celebrity just visited a physical therapist to pop the bone in her foot back into the right place. Jessie J also underwent the ramifications of reconstructive ankle surgery she had two years ago.

Back in 2011, Jessie J was forced to perform at Glastonbury sitting in a gilded throne, as her left foot was in a surgical boot following that ankle break in early June. The singer went extensive reconstructive surgery, receiving a bone transplant and fusion, then had metal fittings and plate into her foot. Jessie J continued to wear high heels, even after doctors warned her to take it easy. “Come on foot. I believe in you. Pop back in and behave! Ouch!” said Jessie J.

It is important to carefully consider all treatment options before choosing a surgical treatment. If you are experiencing foot or ankle pain and are considering surgery, you should see a podiatrist like Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C understands how crucial foot surgery is before making adjustments and getting back into the game. With Dr. Hyman’s help, your injury can be evaluated properly and the right treatment options can be provided for you.

When is Foot Surgery Needed?

Foot surgery is usually required in events where regular therapy has proven to be ineffective. Surgeons often use foot surgery as a last resort because of its invasive nature. In many cases physical therapy, medication, rest, exercise, and casts can help to heal a foot injury.

However, sometimes you may need to have surgery done without ever having an injury. Foot surgery can correct a birth defect or deformity or be used for reconstructive purposes. Foot surgery is designed to improve the quality of your feet and to help you return to your daily life.

In extreme cases where the foot cannot be saved, or is beyond repair and is hinders the health of nearby parts of the body, amputation may be a necessary. However the main goal is to save the feet, making such options a last resort.

A podiatrist like Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C. can make recommendations on how to care and find shoes that fit you, as well as help you with any foot pain you might have experienced from wearing ill-fitting footwear.

Proper Foot Care Leads to Better Health

Long periods of standing often times lead to pain and discomfort around the feet. Every day the body undergoes a series of stresses, especially during work. To minimize these stresses on your feet, better shoe choices and proper posture will significantly help.

Better Choices

A Negative Heel

  • This is where the heel is slightly lower than the ball of the foot.

Going Barefoot

  • Having your feet crammed into shoes for long periods of time increases pressure. Giving your feet some exposure to air and walking barefoot helps tremendously.

Exercise Your Feet

  • A foot workout helps correct movements and stimulates the blood flow and muscles of the feet.

Foot Care

Spending a majority of the time on your feet will most likely trigger pain; even more so if you suffer from poor circulation.  Proper footwear and appropriate stretching will alleviate pain and prevent further issues. When your feet hurt, it is best to take care of them right away.

Brett Anderson, Oakland’s well-known pitcher has been hurt and is expected to be out for some games for assessment of his injury. A recent CT scan has revealed that the athlete suffered a stress fracture.

The 25-year-old left handed pitcher is currently on a 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle. According to the reports, Anderson continues to feel soreness on his right ankle during pitching and fielding practice. Last season, encountered more trouble when he sat out majority of the season due to being in recovery after a surgery he had.

Dealing with a stress fracture, like Anderson’s can be a painful endeavor. Treatment and recovery can be aided with the help of a podiatrist, like Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C. Dr. Hyman can help by examining the stress fracture and determining the best course of treatment.

Coping with Podiatric Stress Fractures

Stress Fractures occur on the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken as a result of overexertion or underuse.  As a result, the ankles and feet lose support when walking or running from the ground. Since these bones are not protected, they receive the full impact of each step. The stress on the feet causes the bones to form cracks.

What are Stress Fractures?

Stress Fractures are very common among those who are highly active and involved in sports or activities that make excessive use of their legs and feet. Stress fractures are especially common among:
-athletes (gymnasts, tennis players, basketball players)
-runners/joggers
-osteoporosis patients
-those who engage in high-intensity workouts

Stress Fracture Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures, and can be either constant or periodic. The pain is usually sharp or dull, accompanied by swelling and tenderness. Engagement in any kind of high impact activity will exacerbate the pain.

Treating Stress Fractures

- Set a routine regimen for any activities that involve running
- Choose footwear that provides good support
- Take bone-healthy supplements (Vitamin D, Calcium)
- Surgery with supportive pins around the ankle

Description: Let-you-feet-breathe-postnoon-newsAccording to Deepashri V. of PostNoon.com, wearing the same shoes on a continual basis may increase the risk of athlete’s foot and fungal growth.

Deepashri suggests allowing your feet to breathe in warm weather by wearing open shoes. Also, refrain from wearing thick socks so your feet stay more sanitary and hygienic. “It is very common. Every fourth or fifth person has it. It is very common in those with diabetes and people who always wear shoes, resulting in lack of air circulation to the feet” said Dr. Sunitha Sekhar Reddy, dermatologist at ADI clinics.

Anyone is susceptible in attaining Athlete’s foot, but can be easily avoided following the right preventative care and treatment. A podiatrist like Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C will be able to determine your condition and follow the appropriate treatment options for foot care needs.

What is Athlete’s Foot?

If you suffer from itching, burning, dry, and flaking feet, this may be a sign of athlete's foot. Athlete's foot, also known as tinea pedis, can be extremely contagious, and it often infects shower floors, gyms, socks and shoes, and anywhere else feet may come in contact with. It is commonly found in public changing areas and bathrooms, dormitory style living quarters, around locker rooms and public swimming pools. This condition can also be prevalent in "commons" areas in prisons and residential care facilities.

Solutions to Combat Athlete’s Foot

- Hydrate your feet by using lotion
- Exfoliate
- Buff off nails
- Use of anti-fungal product
- Examine feet and visit your doctor if any suspicious blisters or cuts are present.

What is Tinea?

- Athlete’s foot is often caused by the same fungus that causes ringworm (tinea).
- Tinea can invade other parts of the body as well, if the proper thriving conditions for it are met.

High HeelsPeople are eager to store away their winter boots and trade them in for their spring sandals and flats now that spring is in the air. On top of this, everyone is looking forward to discovering shoes that properly fit their feet.

However, the shoes that retailers sell have been proven to be dangerous for some shoe-goers; causing problems like tendon injuries and foot pain. In the spring people should always wear a shoe that has a two-inch platform and no more than a three-inch heel, according to Kenneth Leavitt, chief of podiatric medicine at New England Baptist Hospital. “Flat shoes stress the Achilles tendon and cause extensive pronation or flattening of the feet,” Leavitt explained. “Surgery is sometimes warranted for severe, chronic foot pain to fix it.”

It is important that the proper shoes are worn for protection against pain and discomfort. A podiatrist like Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C can make recommendations and help you with any foot pain you might have experienced from wearing ill-fitting footwear.

The Importance of Proper Foot Support

Walking is an everyday function for both men and women, and in order to keep your body’s balance in order, you are going to need shoes that provide the proper kinds of support.

Poor foot support can cause pain and discomfort in the lower back, hips, knees, neck and shoulder. It also can lead to emotional stress, and physiological changes in the body. In order to avoid these problems, you must have proper foot support.

The arch is the most important part of the foot, which is where most of the support and balance of your feet lies. The arch of your foot varies in height, and as you age, this height can change. Proper foot support will help musculoskeletal issues, which causes inactivity or disability.

Shoes to Consider:

  • Good heel and arch support
  • Have proper length and width for your feet
  • Avoid tight/cramped shoes
  • Have many eyelets –will give feet better support when the laces are tied

Healthy Children FeetAt an event in Sanford, NC; 60 children received shoes donated by New Balance and Aetrex and their parents a free lesson on the importance of proper footwear. According to founder of FootCentric and physical therapist Pat Pande, the importance of healthy feet is often overlooked.

“We want to get kids (proper footwear) while they’re young and before they destroy their feet,” Pande commented, “You’d be surprised how many kids have bad feet by 6 or 7 years old.”

The event was sponsored by FootCentric, and one of a series of events held at least twice per year across the state.

It is very important to keep children’s feet safe and healthy, so be sure to have their feet regularly checked by a podiatrist such as Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C. Dr. Hyman can diagnose any injuries as well as provide treatment options that work for you and your child.
Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

  • Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet
  • Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.  Be sure the child wears comfortable and protective shoes so that they can grow into their feet properly.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play

A customer shops for athletic shoes at a Nike store.Selecting the right pair of shoes to exercise is crucial in improving your health and fitness. Choosing footwear that is poorly sized can lead to conditions such as shin splints, according to Hilda Scott of ITech Post. "Symptoms include pain along the inner border of the shin bone of aches and stiffness" said Scott. "In severe cases, muscle tightness, swelling, redness and lumps may occur in the area of pain".

When shopping for the right exercise shoes, select shoes with the best wiggle room, arch support and shock absorption. Additionally, the shoes should have approximately 3/8 to 1/2 inch of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.

Wearing properly fitted exercise shoes can serve to prevent injuries and adverse conditions to your legs and feet. Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C can help size your feet and provide recommendations on the best exercise footwear for your feet so they remain healthy and can provide care should you develop any foot problems.

Getting the Right Shoe Size: How To Keep Your Feet Happy

Are your shoes the right size? Many people are walking around with ill-fitting shoes. Picking the right shoe size is not rocket science, but there are a few things to remember when selecting your next pair.

• Make sure your toes are not cramped
• Be able to wiggle your toes
• There should be one inch between your toes and the shoe's tip

Most shoe stores and department stores have rulers for measuring your feet, and these can give you an exact size. Be sure to measure with your shoe on. Measuring your foot will give you a different size than your shoe. If you do measure your foot size, you will need to add 1-2 inches to get the proper sizing.

If your shoes are not properly sized, you can experience:

• foot pain
• knee pain
• blisters
• swelling

Don't assume that you will always wear the same size in a shoe. Often manufacturers size shoes differently. The size you wear with one company may not be the same as the size you wear with another.
