Healthy Children FeetAt an event in Sanford, NC; 60 children received shoes donated by New Balance and Aetrex and their parents a free lesson on the importance of proper footwear. According to founder of FootCentric and physical therapist Pat Pande, the importance of healthy feet is often overlooked.

“We want to get kids (proper footwear) while they’re young and before they destroy their feet,” Pande commented, “You’d be surprised how many kids have bad feet by 6 or 7 years old.”

The event was sponsored by FootCentric, and one of a series of events held at least twice per year across the state.

It is very important to keep children’s feet safe and healthy, so be sure to have their feet regularly checked by a podiatrist such as Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C. Dr. Hyman can diagnose any injuries as well as provide treatment options that work for you and your child.
Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

  • Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet
  • Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.  Be sure the child wears comfortable and protective shoes so that they can grow into their feet properly.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play

A customer shops for athletic shoes at a Nike store.Selecting the right pair of shoes to exercise is crucial in improving your health and fitness. Choosing footwear that is poorly sized can lead to conditions such as shin splints, according to Hilda Scott of ITech Post. "Symptoms include pain along the inner border of the shin bone of aches and stiffness" said Scott. "In severe cases, muscle tightness, swelling, redness and lumps may occur in the area of pain".

When shopping for the right exercise shoes, select shoes with the best wiggle room, arch support and shock absorption. Additionally, the shoes should have approximately 3/8 to 1/2 inch of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.

Wearing properly fitted exercise shoes can serve to prevent injuries and adverse conditions to your legs and feet. Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C can help size your feet and provide recommendations on the best exercise footwear for your feet so they remain healthy and can provide care should you develop any foot problems.

Getting the Right Shoe Size: How To Keep Your Feet Happy

Are your shoes the right size? Many people are walking around with ill-fitting shoes. Picking the right shoe size is not rocket science, but there are a few things to remember when selecting your next pair.

• Make sure your toes are not cramped
• Be able to wiggle your toes
• There should be one inch between your toes and the shoe's tip

Most shoe stores and department stores have rulers for measuring your feet, and these can give you an exact size. Be sure to measure with your shoe on. Measuring your foot will give you a different size than your shoe. If you do measure your foot size, you will need to add 1-2 inches to get the proper sizing.

If your shoes are not properly sized, you can experience:

• foot pain
• knee pain
• blisters
• swelling

Don't assume that you will always wear the same size in a shoe. Often manufacturers size shoes differently. The size you wear with one company may not be the same as the size you wear with another.

Ankle Sprain Affects NBA Superstar

Tony ParkerSan Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker injured his left ankle in the third quarter against the Sacramento Kings after coming down on his leg awkwardly. Parker needed to be helped up off the court and into the locker room, transferring the burden onto Manu Ginobili. Although the team is making it into the playoffs with or without Parker, this leaves the San Antonio Spurs without their superstar player.

Athletes can miss important games as a result of ankle sprains as in the case of Tony Parker. Ankle sprains should always be treated no matter what. If you have sprained your ankle, seek the aid of a podiatrist like Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C to ensure the injury is properly evaluated and appropriate treatment options are given.

How Ankle Sprains Occur

Ankle sprains take place when ligaments are stretched or torn beyond their capable limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured; including something as simple as walking. Ankle damage can happen from walking on uneven terrain or losing one’s footing.

What are the Symptoms?

  • Skin Discoloration
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Limited Mobility

How to Care for my Ankle at Home?

Self-care for ankle sprains includes keeping it propped up and elevated, remaining off your feet and applying ice packs as needed. Wrapping the ankle with an ACE bandage and taking over-the-counter pain relievers can also be helpful. The most important step is to avoid placing further stress to the affected area.

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing occasion-appropriate shoes
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your body’s limits

Bone Grafts Serve to Treat Arthritis

ArthritisCrane driver and sports enthusiast Brian Girdwood has struggled with arthritis in the joints for six years. “Years of boxing, rugby and marathons in the Army were taking their toll,” said Girdwood. Painkillers and other treatments seemed to have no effect, according to Girdwood. That was until he was offered surgery to remove a small amount of bone from elsewhere in the body and fuse the bones in his neck together to stop them from grinding against each other. Editor Carol Davis states bone fusion is often used to cure some of the wear and tear in the spine and ankles, or for deformities such as hammertoes. For Brain, the benefits have been positive, having his bones fused, and now being able to move his head without fear of pain.

If you are experiencing foot pain and think it might be caused by arthritis, you should seek the care of a podiatrist like Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C is experienced in treating patients with foot pain caused by arthritis, and can provide you with a proper diagnosis to determine if your foot pain is in fact caused by arthritis.

Arthritic Foot Care

We walk approximately 75,000 miles in the average lifetime, putting a great deal of stress on the 26 bones and 30 joints that we have in our feet. Our feet lose flexibility and elasticity as we get older. Our shock absorbers weaken, and if arthritis occurs, the joints become inflamed and distorted. Arthritic foot care and treatment is crucial when this happens.

Take care of your feet by wearing footwear that is well-fitted. Certain conditions can develop when you wear shoes that don’t fit properly; such as hammertoes, neuroma, and bunions. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room in the shoe can help your feet be comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot can become problematic. Buying shoes with adequate arch support helps; especially those that contour to your foot.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

Specific exercises may help prevent further pain and injury and increase your mobility.

A recent study published in Footwear Science shows that the surface underfoot plays a major role in foot-strike determination. Results showed that only 20% of subjects landed on their midfoot or forefoot, on a soft surface. While on a hard surface the percent increased to 65%.

According to UMass running biomechanics group, a study they conducted also showed most test subjects switched to a mid- or forefoot strike on the hard surface when running on hard surface versus soft EVA foam like material. Researchers believe runners tend to be forefoot strikers due a mechanism to “reduce pain.”
The biomechanics of the foot, ankle, and lower leg are essential to understanding the proper functioning of the lower leg and foot. If you suspect a problem with your biomechanics and believe it is causing foot pain, ankle pain, or walking instability, it is recommended to see a podiatrist, like Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C for immediate consultation, care, and treatment options.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body causing an interference with the biological structure and focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

- Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
- In 1974 biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination to the area.

Modern technology improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes providing a better understanding of podiatry concepts for biomechanics. Computers provide accurate determinations about the forces, moments and patterns of the foot and lower legs with the most important information captured.

David Ortiz (Big Papi) is optimistic with his future as a Red Sox, after sharing some news during spring training. “I think it’s going to happen,” said Ortiz when asked if he’d be in the starting lineup on April 1. Ortiz disappeared from the lineup during the last half of the season with an Achilles injury, which was more serious than anyone imagined. Ortiz was only available to play one game after the injury occurred. Unfortunately, Big Papi only made his injury worse. “I was worried about my Achilles snapping, “said Ortiz. Ortiz feels pretty good and secure getting back to the action after undergoing PRP injections, shockwave therapy and other treatments during the rehab process.

Dealing with an Achilles tendon injury like Ortiz can be a painful ordeal. Luckily, an injury like this can be managed and taken care of by a podiatrist like Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C.  Dr. Hyman can examine your Achilles tendon, determine the severity of your injury, and work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options.

What Are the Most Common Injuries to the Achilles Tendon?

Tendon Ruptures: One may hear a popping or snapping sound if their Achilles tendon ruptures.  Symptoms are swelling, pain, and difficulty walking or bending the foot forward. There are surgical and non-surgical procedures available, and depending on the treatment you take, recovery can last up to a year from treatment.

Achilles tendinitis: Achilles tendinitis is the milder of the two injuries, and can be recognized by the following symptoms: inflammation, dull to severe pain, an increased flow of blood to the tendon, portions of the tendon growing in thickness, and a slower movement time. Tendinitis can be treated in many different ways and is often diagnosed by an MRI.

How Can I Avoid Injuries?

  • Stretch before exercising, running or walking
  • Calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and using the leg press
  • Work out on a floor that is cushioned to relieve pressure on your heels.
  • Find properly fitting and comfortable shoes

Description: Master of the waves: Rocker Steven Tyler navigated his paddleboard with ease as he negotiated the waves in HawaiiSteven Tyler, front man for leading band Aerosmith, was diagnosed with Morton’s Neuroma. Since the 1970s the lead singer would wear small shoes and his energetic stage performances caused him to suffer foot pain in the past. Tyler had posted pictures from his vacation in Hawaii with his family, displaying his deformed and swollen toes. According to Tyler, doctors stated the pain in his feet can be corrected with surgeries over time. However, his condition does not appear to be holding him back or slowing him down, especially during his family vacation.

Morton’s Neuroma is a condition that can be very painful and resulted in twisted toes if not treated properly. If you are experiencing pain in your feet, it is best to seek a podiatrist such as of Dr. Howard Hyman of The Podiatry Center, P.C.  Dr. Hyman can examine your feet and work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options to ensure safe foot recovery.

Morton’s Neuroma

Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the third and fourth toe and the ball of the foot, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible to this condition. Morton’s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.  Women are more likely than men to have an occurrence of this foot condition. When a person has Morton's neuroma, it can feel as if they are walking on stones or marbles.

What Increases the Chances of having Morton’s Neuroma?

-Ill-fitting high heels or shoes that add pressure to the toe or foot area.
-Jogging, running and any sports that involve constant impact to the foot area.
-Flat feet, bunions, and any other foot deformity may put you at a higher risk for developing Morton’s neuroma.
